Kokomo Children’s Choir
The Kokomo Children’s Choir was founded in 1997 by Laura Swartzendruber to provide excellent choral training and exceptional opportunities and experiences for children in the Kokomo area. Kokomo is an automotive community 50 miles north of Indianapolis. Mrs. Swartzendruber sees the choir as a “window to the world” as the singers host visiting choirs, travel, supported a singer in the African Children’s Choir, and sing the music of different peoples, different times and different places. The choir’s mantra comes from a statement by Aristotle “We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act, but a habit.”
Laura Swartzendruber is a graduate of Westminster Choir College. She has served in the Teacher’s Abroad program of the Mennonite Central Committee in Newfoundland, Canada, as Minister of Music at the National Baptist Memorial Church in Washington, D.C. and, for the past 30 years, as the Associate Minister of Music at First Presbyterian Church in Kokomo, IN. She teaches organ, Suzuki piano and violin and is the University Organist at Taylor University.
